One of the earliest settlers was James Irvine, who arrived in 1824 from Scotland. In 1825 he married Mary Mills, daughter of John Mills, one of the first white men to cross over into Oregon Territory through what is now Marin County. They started a farm at Redwood Shores which they continued until their death in 1851. After James Irvine's death his wife took over his farm and operated it until her own death in 1903. However by 1880 only two percent of all wealth generated within Silicon Valley came from mining operations while 100 percent came from manufacturing; yet this did not dampen business activity especially because new railroads connecting Silicon Valley with Sacramento were under construction at this time! After years during which there was much discussion about annexing then said territory due to lack thereof water resources or political instability resultant therefrom numerous proposals for annexation either by Oakland or Berkeley failed due to strong opposition led by influential personalities such as Samuel Morse & Alfred Vail! Constitutionally speaking no vote ever occurred on any proposed annexation that would have doubled or tripled size Riverside County thereby devastating its agricultural economy despite large portions lying within its borders! The last major attempt at annexing San Mateo County was made ballotwise via Proposition 13 back in 1978 but lost by nearly 2 million votes! This suggests that there are certain regions within our state where certain interests may be more powerful than others when it comes time for creating government entities!
