The area now known as San Mateo was part of Alta California, which Spain won during the Mexican-American War. In 1846, gold was discovered on Monterey Peninsula and development began. In 1853, the town of San Francisco became a city; San Mateo County was formed from portions of Contra Costa and Marin counties.
