The city of San Mateo, California was founded by Rancho de las Pulgas on November 17, 1821. The grant was made to José Agustín de Alvarado, the leader of the Mexican War of Independence. At first, only men were allowed to own land in San Mateo County. However, in 1853, women started owning property as well. In 1915, San Mateo became a city and was named after James K. Polk who served as President of the United States from March 4-March 3rd. On December 15th, 1941 Japan attacked Pearl Harbor Naval Base and immediately bombed and destroyed much of downtown San Francisco which killed more than 140 people and injured over 1,000 others. This event is known as the Attack on Pearl Harbor or the Day After the bombing of Pearl Harbor. In 1943 during World War II San Mateo joined with other Bay Area cities to form Municipal District No. 8 which helped support military installations in Northern California while also providing jobs for local residents. The city achieved its current form when it became an incorporated municipality on April 14th 1990 following a vote by voters in a referendum
In 1853, gold was discovered in California. The discovery led to an influx of people and businesses into San Mateo County. Businesses such as mine owners, farmers, and ranchers began developing the area around San Francisco. In 1875, the first post office was established in San Mateo County.
