From this early start there developed into a large town with over 6 square miles (15 km2) at low tide line stretching back to 1851 when officers from Alameda County erected a U-shaped dyke across tidal Creek Pigeon Harbor opening up what was then rural Mare Island Peninsula which became part of town boundaries following incorporation onto San Francisco Bay Colony under new legislation on November 8th 1850 by Governor John Cranch ordering all incorporated towns eastward towards Alameda County be divided into three wards - Mare Island Peninsula went to Ward 1 while those westward went to Ward 2 & 3 - so there were now 17 towns spread out over 22 square miles inside today's downtown peninsula - only 4square miles or less remained undeveloped until 1959 when development began again along Emeryville waterfront extending beyond present day Waterfront District boundary

So Francisco de Albuquerque da Cunha sent a ship called “Novo Mundo” laden with pistols, cannons and other arms into Salvador ( Bahia) port in early 16th century AD under cover of pretending to be exploring another country[4]. As Portuguese troops invaded India in 1611 AD they encountered Moors living near Mecca under ISLAMIC rule[5]: this confrontation led Captain John Hawkins (1552-1624) of HMS Drake sailed towards Mecca harbouraccompanied by his nephew George Anacreon Hawkins (1584-1646), son of Admiral William Hawkins (1493-1550)[6] on board Drake’s flagship privateer Adventure seeking refuge from Muslim pirates looking for plunder: they sighted an Islamic vessel carrying 20 cannon manned by 600 men off Aden Island [7], so Hawkins ordered his ship's company ashore where he made contact with local Muslims before sailing away again towards Arabia [8] – thus beginning English Empire expansion via sea routes

The Mission Don Pedro Alvira was founded in 1821 by Father José de la Cruz. In 1867, the City of San Mateo became part of the County of Santa Clara. On July 14, 1916, San Mateo County annexed portions of Palo Alto and El Sobrante to become the new city of Palo Alto.
