In 1853, San Mateo County began regulate the sale and possession of firearms. The first law required all pistols and revolvers to be registered with the county sheriff. The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution protects Americans' right to bear arms, and gun control laws were passed in response to this amendment. The Gun Control Act of 1968 expanded gun control measures in the United States by adding provisions regulating magazines, firearm manufacturing, trade shows, transfers of firearms (including between families), and sales of Firearms by Persons under 21 years old. In 1990, San Mateo County became one of five California counties which joined forces to form the National Rifle Association (NRA). This alliance helped support NRA-backed efforts at state level through donations and lobbying. Today, San Mateo County is home to many different firearms businesses including a pawn shop that specializes in antique weapons; a manufacturer of shotguns and rifles; an online store selling pistols and revolvers; as well as a range for handguns and rifle training. It is unclear when this firearm became available to the general public; it may have been released as early as 1907 or 1908 depending on how one counts weapon introductions in California. The revolver was produced in four different calibers: .32 ACP (short Colt rifle cartridges), .380 ACP (9mm Mauser rounds), .357 SIG (6-shot Smith & Wesson rounds), and .45 ACP (4-shot Winchester rounds). This handgun is considered one of the most important Firearms in American history because it ushered in what is now known as "the Golden Age of Pistol Shooting".

The City of San Mateo was founded in 1795 by Juan Francisco de Haro, who named it for his patron saint, Saint Mary of the Rocks. The city grew rapidly due to its location on the north shore of San Francisco Bay and its access to maritime trade. In 1851, San Mateo became County seat of Santa Clara County, and in 1868, it became a state capital when California became a state. The population reached 125,000 by 1890 and then rapidly increased as new industries developed such as lumber and shipbuilding. However, during the 1930s-1970s there was significant decline in the city's population with only 3600 residents remaining by 1990. Today,San Mateo is home to some of Silicon Valley's largest companies including Google (GOOGL), Facebook (FB), Microsoft (MSFT), Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Oracle Corporation (ORCL).
The town of San Mateo was founded in 1853 by Father Francisco Sanchez and his wife, María del Carmen. The first post office was established in San Mateo in 1856. By the 1860s, San Mateo had a population of about 50 people. In 1865, the town voted to become an independent city. The first mayor of San Mateo was Isidro Garrido.
