In 1853, a land grant of 640 acres was given to José Joaquín de Alvarado by the Mexican government. The area that is now San Mateo County was part of Alvarado’s Rancho Santa Cruz. In 1876, three men – George Hearst, David Levy and John P. Richardson – bought the property from Alvarado for $10 per acre. They founded the towns of San Francisco and Palo Alto on the site. The town of Redwood City was established in 1934 by combining parts of San Francisco and Palo Alto. In 1941, when Silicon Valley was created as an area code for Northern California, San Mateo became part of that new code. Today, San Mateo County has a population of over 105,000 people and covers an area of 242 square miles (716 square kilometers).

The first Europeans to set foot in San Mateo County were the Spanish in 1768. The mission of San Francisco was founded in 1821 and became a United States military post during the Mexican-American War. In 1853, San Mateo County was created from parts of Santa Clara and Marin counties. The county seat was moved to Redwood City in 1856. In 1916, the last gasp of smallpox led to over 1,000 deaths in the county as a result of preventable disease; this event is considered one of the great public health disasters in California history.
