In 1932 Luigi D’Angelo purchased part of the original Rojas ranch which had been left vacant since 1900 by Antonio’s deathbed gift to Luigi as compensation for not being able to take over his father’s grocery store chain after Antonio died suddenly at age 58 years old on November 11th that year (the same day that Governor Pat Brown was inaugurated). After purchasing this land, D’Angelo began developing it into what is today known as “San Marino Hills Country Club” which features tennis courts, golf courses and other recreational amenities for local citizens and visitors alike (www.sbccolfclubsanmarino hills). In 1907, voters approved a $10 million bond issue to build a new hospital, school and jail in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt. This led to an argument between the two cities over who would get what share of the tax dollars generated by businesses within their borders.
