The first human settlement in San Marino was by the Mission Indians in 1795. In 1857, the United States purchased land east of San Bernardino County from the Arroyo Seco Company and built Fort Point on what is now Point Reyes National Seashore. As Californians began to arrive here following Gold Rush Fever in 1849, they quickly developed a strong interest in maintaining their own country despite being surrounded by what they saw as an Americanized country. By 1861, when California entered into its own Civil War, most of San Marino had become Union territory following a compromise between Confederate General John C. Fremont and President Abraham Lincoln. The fortifications at Point Reyes were abandoned in 1865 when California joined the Union; however, some remnants remain today (e.g., Fort Yerba Buena State Park), serving as a reminder of this past conflict.
