The rifle was purchased by John Fenton and named the “Fenton Rifle” after its inventor. In 1957, the City Council passed an ordinance outlawing licensed carry of handguns without a license. This law remains in effect to this day. In 1959, San Marino became one of only two cities (the other being Palm Springs) in California that allowed concealed carry of rifles and shotguns without a license. This decision followed a study done by the City Attorney’s Office which determined that firearms were necessary for self-defense purposes within the city limits. Since 1990, San Marino has had an LGBT shield program which allows qualified individuals to conceal their firearms while engaging in any political activity or demonstration protected under state or federal law including protests, demonstrations or vigils related to same-sex marriage or support thereof. San Marino is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Valley, at an elevation of 5,478 feet (1,762 m). The first Europeans to visit San Marino were Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1795. They built missions and ranchos here until 1821 when Mexico gained independence from Spain and founded its own government. The mission system was abandoned in 1831 and most of what is now San Marino was annexed by Los Angeles County. In 1865, General Antonio Jethro Gibbs purchased land east of Pasadena for $10 per acre (0.40 rupees/square kilometer) to develop into what would become known as "Gibbs Ranch". In 1868 he donated 640 acres (250 ha) to the town site that would be named after him - Gibbs Ranch Park Today's City of San Marino was founded on December 12th, 1870 when 8 families moved into new homes along State Route 54 which became Main Street. The first post office opened in 1871; it changed its name to Mariposa in 1897 because no other place called Mariposa had been given by Garcia. On July 1st 1901 a fire destroyed part of downtown but did not damage any structures other than some libraries which were rebuilt within weeks. -On January 25th 1907 a fire destroyed a warehouse district near downtown which contained over 100 businesses including 14 banks and 2 insurance companies.-A large effort was made to rebuild this district within weeks with assistance from volunteers from all over Southern California.–On October 6th 1907 the Ventura County Board of Supervisor approved annexation by San Marino.–On November 7th 1907 ordinance number 10-A authorizing incorporation as a city was passed by councilmember Harry Ewing.–November 15th 1907 act number 13-A setting up municipal government provided for voting qualifications for citizens 21 years or older., The following day Mayor George Wuerfel presented his proposal for cityhood to councilmember Harry Ewing who approved it without dissenting on December 12th 1907.–December 15th 1907 act number 17-B creating Municipal Court authorized business transactions between City Council members and court administrators.–December 16th 1907 ordinance numbers 10-C & 20-C authorizing street lighting ordinances were passed

In 1870, the United States acquired 3,686 square miles (10,571 km²) of California country east of the Mexican border through purchase from Mexico. This included much of present-day Riverside County and parts of Orange County and Ventura County. The name “San Marino” comes from Mission San Gabriel Arcángel which served as a spiritual center for many Californios during this time period. It sat on top of a hill that overlooked both Los Angeles Basin to the east and downtown Los Angeles to the west. In 1923, after years of discussion between various communities throughout southern California about whether or not they wanted their own town or village within their borders, voters in San Marino elected to form their own municipality with its own government and school district. Today there are over 20 villages/towns across Southern California established pursuant to this decision making process including: La Jolla Village; Corona del Mar Village; Carlsbad Village; Escondido Village; Teaneck Village; GardenaVillage; Banning Villa;; Miramar Village;; PowayVillage;; Rancho Santa Ana Beach Villages
