San Marino is a small, unincorporated community located in San Bernardino County, California. It lies at an elevation of 1,451 feet (436 meters). The community is served by the nearby town of Westminster. The first permanent settlement in what is now San Marino was established in 1824 by two brothers, Lorenzo and Giovanni Monti. In 1836, four men from Loreto founded the village of Westminster on the east side of San Marino Creek. A post office was established at Westminster in 1838 and remained open until 1914. In 1860, a group of investors purchased 5 acres (2 hectares) near where present-day San Marino sits for $1 per acre ($27 per hectare). They named the property "Riverside Heights". By 1870, most residents had left to establish new settlements elsewhere due to the cost involved with farming in those difficult conditions. However, some remain buried there today as part of Riverside National Cemetery #1. A school district was organized within Riverside County in 1916 and called "Los Angeles Union School District". The name change came about because then-President Woodrow Wilson wanted schools serving all Americans operated by one organization instead of having them split between different districts. At that time there were only five schools within Los Angeles County: West Side High School (now Hollywood Hills), Silver Lake Elementary School (now Echo Park), Pomona Valley Jr./Sr., Cahuilla Valley Jr./Sr., and Arroyo Seco Elementary School; so when this new school system got started it appeared as if everyone had their own school district! In 1951 both Westminster and Riverside High Schools were closed down; they became part of Los Angeles Unified School District which continues to operate these schools today as well as Cal State Fullerton’s Claremont Campus which opened in 1967 but closed in 1989 due to budget cuts. Today there are just six students enrolled at san marin high school...and no staff! There isn't even a building for classes anymore...just lots of empty space

The new government had some unusual features: all citizens were required to swear an oath of allegiance to the US Constitution before they could vote or hold office. The country also levied taxes on exports and imports. In 1860, a group of Americans who had been living in San Marino for several years petitioned Congress to recognize it as an independent nation. They received support from then-Senator John Fenton Butler (R-KY) and Congressman George Hynes (D-NY). On July 12, 1860, the US Senate voted 54 to 36 in favor of recognizing San Marino as an independent country. The House approved the measure on July 16. On October 15, 1860, President James Buchanan signed legislation creating San Marino as a territory controlled by the US Treasury Department rather than by Congress. On December 21st 1870 Census results showed that there were only 3 people living inSanMarino; all were Italian immigrants working in agriculture
