In 1863, during the American Civil War, General John Sutter discovered great goldfields near Mono and decided to move his army into Mono Valley in order to assay for gold there instead of suppliesbringing about 400 men plus their equipment and location which would have been essential for developing any new resources found in that area according to current thinking At one point General Sutter had almost 10% ownership interest in both Monterrey Universal Copper Company -owned land serviced by Monterrey Mine but primarily operated by Mexican troops under US command -and Gold Fields Mining Company -owned but not managed by US forces -both properties are now owned and operated by GFM Inc., headquartered in Reno Nevada today Accordingly on July 25th 1865 he wrote: "I am directed to request that you will send me 2 teams immediately start upon your return home with full instructions as soon as possible so that I may make an examination...of these wonderful prospects" The team consisted of Captain George Atherton commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Wm Heston with Major Augustus Daly providing expert surveying services Together they took more than 14 months making observations along streams bedding hills & uncovering previously unsuspected veins totaling over $2 million worth realized over 6 years later They returned empty handed however no charge was made against them cuz rich mines lay just outside our lines

In 1850–1851 Colonel George Custer led an army exploring western United States west of Sacramento into what is now Arizona when he passed through Mono County on his way southward; this inspired General Pershing to name San Bernardino County after Custer’s place of battle days later while still withinMono County boundaries.– Map showing location
