The population grew rapidly during World War II as American citizens poured into the area to serve in military or postwar roles; however, after hostilities ended in 1945 most people returned home and government functions were taken over by local agencies such as schools and jails until 1996 when they were transferred to San Bernardino County. In that year zoning changes approved by county supervisors caused growth along State Route 66 (the only major road connecting downtown Los Angeles with rural parts of southern California) which has continue to affect daily life in neighboring communities including Rolling Hills Ranch (just east of town), Sun Valley Village (west side) and Imlay Heights (east side). Most recently Interstate 5 has cut through town forming what used to be one continuous block from north to south between University Avenue/Rolling Hills Boulevard/State Route 66 junction and City Hall Drive/Sun Valley Boulevard junction - making it difficult for locals to get around without getting lost or taking longer routes than necessary within their own communities

The first settlement on the present-day island was made in 1860 when two brothers named John and James Hill erected a cabin on the mainland until they were joined by their brother’s wife Emma. With no land available for farming or housing, fishermen began trading with Indians along the coast and selling them goods such as fishhooks and other seafood items worth $5 per ton. In 1870, San Marino became an incorporated town under the name of Pacific Palisades after state legislators granted its petition for incorporation. On July 15 of that year, votersapproved incorporation with a population of just 23 residents. The town soon built a schoolhouse and began purchasing lots for development which would form its nucleus today. A post office was opened in 1872 and continued serving until 1915 when it moved to Hermosa Beach due to growth in population. In 1908, Mayor George Wernham designated San Marino as one of three cities within Los Angeles County which would be home to both city governments and respective schools systems under one roof. On November 1st that year, voters approved annexation into Los Angeles County adding an additional 2 miles (3 km) to the existing town limits making it encompass all of present day San Marino Island including Cerritos Peninsula Since then: -San Marino has seen steady growth with a current population of more than 60,000 people -A wide range of cultural attractions are available throughout the city center including art galleries, theaters and musical venues -The economy is based largely on services provided by local businesses such as law enforcement agencies and health care providers
The first European settlement in San Marino was made by the Portuguese in 1521. The Spanish also founded a small colony there in 1795. However, the United States set up its own government there in 1821, and it remained an American protectorate until 1912 when it became part of the newly formed Italian Republic.
