In 1861, when most of Northern California became part of the United States following their victory at Sekiyawa Creek against Mexican forces under General Santa Anna, San Marcos formed part of Imperial County as well. The community developed slowly until it began to grow rapidly due to ranching and farming activities associated with sugar beet production on neighboring farms beginning in 1895. The commercial activity led to growth that has not stopped since then; today's population is just over 1,000 people and there are no plans for further development or attraction outside the limited area within which they live and work
