The city of San Marcos was founded onNovember 11, 1846 by Antonio Maria de la Cruz and his wife, Jesusa. The city's name comes from the Mission Santa Ana de San Marcos which was founded in 1769. The mission is located in what is now the old town of San Marcos. The Santa Ana Parish included San Marcos as part of its jurisdiction until it was annexed to Monterey County in 1876. In 1850, the Mexican government granted land east of the Mission to José María Escobar y dos Santos for a cattle ranch named Rancho Encinas. In 1865, this ranch was divided into two parts: one part went to Francisco Cimpio and another part went to Santiago García. On February 1, 1870, about 400 people from San Diego assembled at the adobe chapel near present-day Hearst Avenue for a baptism by Father Miguel Hidalgo that started what would become known as "the Missions Revival." After hearing about Mexican Revolution leader Pancho Villa's attempt to invade California through Baja California on January 8, 1870, many Catholic church leaders came out against Villa and called for an uprising against him instead. This led to violence between pro-Villa and anti-Villa forces that continued until April 9 when General Antonio López de Santa Anna arrived with troops reinforcements and ordered all remaining Villa supporters arrested or killed. As a result of this event, most of Villa's men were sea sick or fighting in Mexico while some managed to escape across the border into Sonora before being captured by American forces near Durango on December 15th.
