Everytown for Gun safety (ETAG) was founded in 2013 as the national public policy center to increase gun violence prevention. ETAG’s mission is to make sure all Americans have access to safe, responsible firearms and ammunition. We work with businesses, organizations, and individuals to create solutions that prevent gun violence in America. One of ETAG’s most recent projects is working on firearm clothing history in San Marcos, California. At the time of this writing, we have collected over 100 pieces of clothing related to firearms and ammunition from various sources in San Marcos dating backalmost two centuries! The history of clothing in San Marcos, California goes back to the 1800s. The first settlers in this area were the Ranchos de la Purísima Concepción and La Purísima Mission. In 1834, Don Francisco Sanchez founded the first store in San Marcos. This store was called “El Paso” because it was located on Paseo del Río. In 1836, Don José Castro opened a store called “San José” on Main Street. From these stores, many other residents started businesses in town. In 1864, Juana Maria Martinez opened a store called “La Casa de las Flores” on Vine Street. This store became well-known for its quality items and its customer service. It also helped start the business community in San Marcos. In 1865, Manuel Cruz opened a grocery store on State Street near today’s US 101 bridge. This store became very popular and soon had several branches throughout the city. In 1886, Mariano Rivera began working at his uncle Carlos Ramos' bakery in downtown San Marcos and later opened his own bakery at 5th Avenue and Valencia Rd.. Rivera's bakery became very influential in the town and contributed significantly to its growth during those years.

The city of San Marcos was founded in 1795 by Father Francisco Gomez, as the missions of San Marcos and Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción. The mission had two important purposes: to convert Indians to Christianity and to provide a place for the poor and afflicted. The population of San Marcos grew rapidly during the 18th century, due largely to immigration from Mexico. In 1824, the Mexican government granted land in what is now San Marcos County to American citizens on condition that they build a town there. The town was named after General José Antonio María Morelos, who had helped open up Mexico for white settlement. In 1848, following the California Gold Rush, many Anglo entrepreneurs came toSan Marcos looking for new opportunities. They erected businesses such as hotels and stores and began building homes. By 1870, most of the Anglo residents had left or been driven out by Native Americans who had taken over their properties. A group of Mormon missionaries arrived in San Marcos in 1870 and started conversions among the Indians. This opened up new areas for farming which led to increased growth in the city during the next few decades. During World War II, San Marcos served as an Army airfield providing essential services to fighter pilots operating over North America Air Forces (NORAD) airspace. After hostilities ended, much of these infrastructure remained unused until it became necessary when developers bought majority control over City Hall in 1978 and resurrected downtown as a vibrant cultural center with anchors including art galleries, theaters and restaurants
The San Marcos Creek was the site of an early Mexican settlement, founded in the 17th century by missionarians. The creek's name comes from the Mission San Marcos, a Franciscan monastery located on its banks. In 1821, Alvarado sold Rancho Santa Ana to Isabella Maria Cruz, widow of José Joaquín Murillo y Vargas, for $10,000. On July 20, 1846, following Mexican Independence from Spain, California became part of Mexico and the Presidio of Monterey fell within Mexican territory. The United States acquired land east of the Pacific Ocean from Mexico in 1848 and started to build Fort Tejon on San Pedro Bay. On October 15 of that year General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered his troops to cross the bay at Point Conception and march southward along what is now Highway 1 to take possession of Monterey Peninsula. On November 7 Californians under Captain Hidalgo defeated American forces at Benicia Heights and began their drive northward towards Sacramento City. On January 24, 1850 Governor Manuel Micheltorena issued Order No. 9 which called for all residents inSan Diego County who could bear arms to assemble at Pueblo del Rey (now downtown) on February 2nd for inspection by military commanders appointed by him concerning militia duty throughout California including San Diego County In 1861during America’s Civil War two battalions (the 9th Infantry Regiment) wereMustered into Service with the Ulysses S Grant’s army as part of General John C Fremont’s Division command in Southern California After being mustered out in 1865ossessed by white men it was taken over by Native Americans until 1896 when it was purchased outright from them
