In 1951, tool manufacturer DeWitt Clinton created the first tactical flashlight with an electronic switchblade insertable into one of its three barrels (the others were made out of brass). San Luis Obispo, California is a large city in the US state of California. The population was 134,621 at the 2010 census. It is located on the central coast of Northern California, about 25 miles south of San Francisco and 40 miles east of Los Angeles. The name "San Luis Obispo" means "place where Saint Lucius died." The town was founded by Juan Bautista de Anza in 1795 as an agricultural colony named Rancho San Luis Obispo de la Florida. In 1824, the area became part of Mexico when it seceded from Spain and became part of American Mexico. In 1849, USA Polk awarded land to 24 men who would become known as "Los Padres," or The Fathers. This land included most of what now makes up San Luis Obispo County and parts of Santa Barbara County. The Father's Farmlands Project was designed to create a self-sufficient community for Californios during their first years after becoming a United States citizens. The first public school opened in 1851 and the first church was built in 1853 (). After Mexican independence from Spanish rule, San Luis Obispo voted against joining the new Republic of Mexico; this decision set off much controversy within Mexican America over whether or not to remain independent. On July 20th, 1850 - just three weeks after Ulysses S Grant became President - Mexicans living in San LuisObispo revolted against their new government led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna (1792–1846). Most people surrendered peacefully but several thousand resistants fighting with firearms took refuge inside Mission Dolores until they were betrayed by local militiamen on October 12th and sacked that day without any resistance having been offered by either side. On December 8th 1830 there occurred another revolt known as La Guerra Patriótica which continued until finally crushed on February 9th 1931 using force from Mexican Army units supervised by Ulysses S Grant himself.. A total number killed has never been ascertained due to lack evidence or political suppression over this period however estimates range anywhere from 50-90%. Thousands more ranchos were razed to make way for urban development; however some vestiges still remain today including missions such as Mission Concepción (built 1793), Mission Santa Clara (1800),Mission Dolores (1824), and Mission Santa Cruz(1836). Today there are still many small villages scattered throughout inland southern San Luis Obisopo while larger towns have consolidated into downtowns around major streets like 9th Street near Interstate 5/UCLA Campus Area or 2nd Street NW near State Route 101A . Although primarily agricultural based until recent decades most industry now exists along I-5 corridor with heavy housing developments catering mostly to students, professionals & immigrants streaming into town everyday looking for affordable housing
The region around San Luis Obispo, California was settled by the Llanos people in the mid-19th century. In 1821, Mexican General Manuel Micheltorena used San Luis Obispo as a military base to launch an attack against American forces at Vallejo. The Battle of San Luis Obispo took place on October 24, 1821 and ended with a decisive victory for Mexico. The town of San Luis Obispo was founded in 1824 on the site of what is now downtownSanLuisco. In 1853, the first public school opened inSanLuisco and in 1861, County Road 9 was designated as the first county road in California. By 1870, there were over 20 miles (32 kilometers) of roads connecting San Luis Obispo with other parts of California. In 1865, local residents organized a militia to resist Governor John Cranch's attempt to centralize government control within his new state of California. After months of organizing and training, these volunteers brought down Cranch's forces at the Battle of Montezuma Creek on February 17, 1865. This successful resistance led to increased concern among Californians about any possible change in policy by Cranch and provided a model for future insurrections against state governments throughout the United States. On December 12th 1863 three days after Christmas (the Feast of Our Lady), General Vallee's brigade under Lieutenant Colonel Jaffrey crossed over from Fort Tejon into Santa Clara Valley beyond Mount Diablo below Los Gatos Summit to attack Rancho Rincon de la Vieja Spanish Mission about five miles east from present day city limits nearpresent day Cerritos Mesa Boulevard and Highway 1 north/south
