San Luis Obispo, California (/sɑn/ ˈlʌdzəoʊ/; officially the County of San Luis Obispo, California) is a county located in southwestern California. As of the 2010 census, its population was 157,826. The name "San Luis Obispo" means "St. Lucy's Fortress." The first Europeans to visit what is now San Luis Obispo were Spanish missionaries in 1769-1770. Spanish traders and soldiers used the site for cattle and goods from Fillmore Bay on the Pacific coast before taking up permanent residence in 1821 as part of Juan Bautista Alvarado's Rancho Portolá grant including parts of modern-day Santa Clara County. In 1846, after Mexico won its independence from Spain, Mexican citizens voted to become a separate county within Mexican territory called Alameda County. However, because San Francisco had been part of American territory since 1848, Californians continued to call their new county by that name until it was renamed San Luis Obispo County in October 1850 with help from then-Governor Pio Pico. The town of Paso Robles was founded on land that later became part of San Luis Obispo County by Captain James Irvine in 1851 and named for him. On July 8, 1861 - days after Abraham Lincoln was elected Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President - General John Woolridge attacked Los Angeles while cavalry searching forual insurgents near present-day Redondo Beach (which he erroneously thought lay at Monterey Peninsula). A local militia company known as Company K responded and drove Woolridge and his forces back into Chino Hills where they lost over 50 men killed or wounded before withdrawing without further damage or casualties on July 9th under orders from General George Armstrong Custer two days earlier when he assumed command following the death of Confederate Major General David Hunter at Black Mountain outside Phoenixville Junction PA
