In 1884, American Stephen Kearny and his company erected a 20-foot by 30-foot target stand on the San Luis Obispo River. The stand was used for rifle practice during Naval maneuvers. In 1907, the company became known as Kearny’s Shooting Park and continued to operate until 1938. From 1908 to 1912, the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce held an annual shooting competition at the park. The event is still considered one of the most prestigious in California. In 1916, Kearny’s Shooting Park was bought by Colonel Edward S. Smith who made it his home range for hunting and target shooting. Construction on these two missions began in 1798 but only lasted until 1800 because Director Miguel Miramonalde died suddenly before he could finish building them The original structure for these two missions was a adobe chapel which served as both church and garrison headquarters during the 200 years that they were operating In 1819 Juan Bautista Alvarado arrived in Monterey County looking for land grants totaling 2 million acres (848 sq km) including parts of present-day San Luis Obispo County He set up shop here among other pioneers such as Jose Joaquin Moraga and Antonio Canova Alvarado named his new settlement after Padre Isidro Burgos who had been sent along with Father Junípero Serra to help build Mission Santa Clara near Visalia several weeks earlier Alvarado also donated some land located north of present day downtown called La Cala which would later be renamed El Camino Real after Emperor Napoleon I's road connecting Mexico City through Sonoma County . Burgos Street still stands today near Mission Viejo ; traces remaining from his donation can be seen just east of US 101A where Highway 9 crosses over from Interstate 5 onto Park Boulevard . Although originally intended solely for religious purposes, Mission Santa Cruz soon became an important center for local commerce . By 1830 most all resident Indians had left or been driven out by white settlers . Some Indian artifacts may still be found scattered throughout southernmost portions of la county today
