In 1848, during Gold Rush days in California, San Luis Obispo became one of the most prosperous cities in America due to its strategic location on both sides of a major waterway and its abundance of natural resources such as silver and gold. By 1850, however, following decades of economic decline in California due to competition from other Oregon and Nevada mining towns (San Francisco had already become an expensive city by then), San Luis Obispo's population began to drop precipitously and it fell victim to political corruption scandals that rocked the city throughout much of the late 19th century. However, despite these problems, some aspects ofSan Luis Obisporo history remain highly significant including its role as home to two de facto world capitals during World War II: Los Angeles and Nagoya ( Japan ).
