The name "San Luis Obispo" had been recommended to him by General Pedro Fages when he visited the town in 1837. There were two schools established in San Lorenzo: la Iglesia de Domingo (1776) and el Colegio de Jesús (1821). On July 1, 1850, when California became a state, SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY was created from parts of Alameda County and Napa County with an population of less than 10,000 people; this number would grow rapidly over the next few decades as new settlements were founded throughout central California including Livermore Valley and Los Angeles County
