The history of target shooting in San Luis Obispo, California can be traced back to the late 1800s when rifle and shotgun shooters from the area began using small-town towns as their shooting ranges. In 1902, a group of men from San Luis Obispo organized an NRA meeting in order to discuss ways to improve gun safety. This led to the establishment of the San Luis Obispo Rifle and Shotgun Club in 1903. The club’s first target was a 10-foot by 20-foot post at the corner of First and Main Streets. From this location, shooters could take aim at any object within range. The club continued to meet regularly until 1932, when it disbanded due to lack of membership. In 1937, NRA member John Ahern donated two shotguns and three rifles to the San Luis Obispo Rifle and Shotgun Club for use as training rifles at local high school Range Day matches. At that time, only boys were allowed on these ranges so these new additions helped increase women’s participation in target shooting. By 1951, there had been enough growth around town for a second club (the Women’s NRA) to be established with additional equipment and memberships available for both sexes. That same year saw the opening of what is now known as NRA Headquarters Building south of First Street on State College Boulevard which served as a permanent home for targets throughout much of its history. During World War II, many businesses closed because they were unable or unwilling to participate in war production; however, several businesses did contribute Target Shooting equipment such as American Tractor Company located on University Avenue which contributed ten sets ofTarget Sheets along with five bags fullof rounds each week during 1942-1945; also nearby Goudreau’s Grocery store donated four sets(of 40 rounds each)of machineguns including two 6x30mm Mauser pistols during 1944 pandemic period; finally Mrs Haggerty donated her private home near Campus Drive which became our temporary indoor range during 1945 pandemic period; all together these contributions amountingto nearly $2200 . This type of public support encouraged other businessesowners either temporarily or permanently donate surplus weapons or equipment during wartime years thereby increasing firearms availability statewide for all citizens whether amateur or professional shooters alike without having any impact on prices or availability

In 1821, the area that is now San Luis Obispo County was part of Rancho Santa Rita. In 1836, following the Mexican-American War, California was acquired by the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The new government set out to build a national capital and chose San Luis Obispo as its site. The town began to grow rapidly, and in 1850 it had a population of 5,000. By 1870, San Luis Obispo had become an important commercial center with a thriving cotton industry. Throughout its history, San Luis Obispo has been a bastion of American culture and politics. The first permanent European settlers in San Luis Obispo County were two brothers, Juan and Pedro de la Garza, who founded the Presidio of San Luis Obispo on January 3, 1795. The original rancho was only a small piece of land covering about 10 acres. In 1804, José Joaquín Cámpora y Valdés purchased the Rancho del Arroyo Seco from Captain John Sutter for $5 per acre. This purchase made it possible to develop the area around present-day San Luis Obispo City and create one of California's most important winegrowing valleys. In 1836, Don Carlos Pico granted the Rancho Laguna Blanca to Manuel Nieto and his brother Jesús Nieto. The Niebla grant covered an area that is now known as Mariposa Valley. It became part of the Mexican government when it was ceded to United States in 1848 after Mexico's defeat in the Mexican–American War. After Mexican independence was gained in 1912, sections of this rancho were acquired by various United States citizens including Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail for development into what is today Santa Cruz County. In 1853, the US Navy built a shipyard at Point Conception on the north shore of Monterey Bay so that American sailors could build warships in local waters during World War II while they were waiting for supplies to reach America from Europe. The shipyard eventually became Naval Station Monterey. The plant closed its doors in 1969 but still hosts visiting ships every year through summer months
