The first European settlement in what is now San Luis Obispo County was made by Spanish explorers on December 15, 1769 under the name de la Roca, after their captain Manuel de la Roca. The original mission and parish were both founded by Father Fernando Romero with instructions to establish an agricultural society for the indigenous peoples of Alta California. Mission San Francisco began missions in 1821 and ended in 1826; it had been intended as a terminus for missionaries travelling down the Santa Clara Valley but only a small number reached San Luis Obispo. In 1846, when Mexico won its independence from Spain and became an independent country, San Luis Obispo became part of Mexican territory as part of Coahuila y Tejas Province. In 1850, following the admission of Oregon into the United States as a free state, San LuisObispo became part of this new state; it remained so until 1906 when it reverted back to Mexican soil under US jurisdiction pursuant to Treaty #8 which ended World War I. On April 20, 1912 - just before his death - Don José Alvarez granted voting rights to Native Americans within Mexican territory who resided eastward along what is now Interstate 5 between Soquel and Paso Robles; these rights continued until 1943 when they were transferred to the appropriate Indian agency within U S government lands north of Coyote Hills Reservoir approximately 10 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles (the area now known as Azusa). In 1933 - during Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal - Congress passed legislation creating Hearst Corporation which would own large tracts including much of eastern Ventura County including parts adjacent to present-day San Luis Obispo County; this land would be used for agricultural purposes with municipal services limited primarily to housing developments released from taxation upon purchase or lease by Hearst Corporation onto individual families or businesses owner/operators becoming eligible for various social programs such as education and health care during their tenure Thereafter numerous major development projects were undertaken throughout most or all portions thereof while still remaining municipally run: prominent examples being: Northridge Mall (1946), Claremont Colleges foothills site (1948), University Park Plaza (1951), Sycamore Shopping Center (1960), Old Town Plaza (1964) and then finally Downtown Los Angeles annexed thereto in 1987 Some 1 million people have lived within easy walking distance since its incorporation therein into America’s third largest city Today more than 350 restaurants serve local cuisine offering more than 12 thousand items on three dozen menus More than one hundred art galleries exhibit nearly two hundred pieces each variety representing nearly every nation represented on Earth
