San Luis Obispo is a small town located in Northern California. It was founded in 1795 by Manuel Nieto and his family, who were Sephardic Jews from Spain. The city has a population of just over 10,000 people today, making it the third-largest city in San Luis Obispo County. The City of San Luis Obispo was first settled on what is now the corner of Second Street and Vine Street. In 1821, José Altamirano granted land to the town for irrigation purposes. The first store opened in 1825 at Third and Church Streets. The first school was opened in 1827 at Fourth and Center Streets. In 1840, San Luis Obispo became part of Mexican territory after Californias admission to the United States as a state. At that time, all Spanish-speaking residents were deported or booted from their homes in California except for those who could prove they had ancestry back to Mexico or some other Spanish country. The city received its current name from then-Governor Manuel Nieto (1876-1952). When he took office in 1952, he saw that many of the businesses around town had been named after Governors or high-ranking officials of California such as John Coyle (1869-1948), Edwin Edwards (1900-1975), and George Busby (1902-1985). After hearing about a local contest where citizens could win tickets to see Gandhi's ashes carried into India on an elephant through San Francisco Bay via ferry, Governor Nieto decided that San Luis Obispo would be good for this type of tourism promotion since it had no history or special attractions associated with it other than being close to one of the most famous tourist destinations on Earth!

The population of the town increased from 2,000 to 20,000 during the late 19th century and early 20th century. In 1916, San Luis Obispo County was created from parts of Monterey County. The population of San Luis Obispo grew to over 100,000 by 1920. In 1944, part of San Luis Obispo County was transferred to Ventura County as a result of the Gold Rush era in California. During World War II, San Luis Obispo residents served in the United States military including serving in the Pacific Theater where they played an important role in providing food and supplies for troops on Guam and Okinawa.
