The postwar boom led to development along several key corridors: downtownSanLuisco; North Beach; East Bay; and South Bay. However, many properties along those corridors were developed at high speed without consideration for character or density - leading to some longstanding complaints about sprawl throughout much of town (see also "The Making Of SAN LUIS OBISPO"). In recent decades, however, efforts have been made to improve public transportation options and densify neighborhoods while preserving important aspects of town character such as independent businesses and low-income homes (see also "Development And Racial Politics In SAN LUIS OBISPO"). Despite these positive changes, progress has been slow due to various challenges including limited funding sources available for neighborhood improvement projects; resistance from powerful business interests seeking more dense areas within easy commuting distance; and opposition from some residents who allege that gentrification has eroded traditional values among longtime residents while increasing disadvantage among new arrivals.
The area that is now San Luis Obispo, California was Exploited by the Spanish in 1769. It was part of Alta California and they named it after San Lorenzo Mountain. The first Europeans to visit this area were the Franciscans who arrived in 1769. They built a chapel on what is now Mount Pismo Peak and called this area "Los Olivos". After a few years, the Franciscans left because of Indian attacks and the new mission system was established. The first Jesuit priest to arrive here was Father José de Legazpi who founded Mission Santa Clara de la Encinas in 1821. The people of this region started farming in the 1840s and soon had a population of around 2,000. In 1851, Mexico gained independence from Spain and began to make changes to its government which led to an increase in agriculture here. This led to a rise in prices for crops and made it easier for farmers to sell their products abroad. With more farmland available, there also came more people looking for places to live and work. One result of this growth was an increased demand for goods exported from San Luis Obispo County such as wine, cheese, lumber, fish eggs etcetera. This led to an expansion of commerce within the county as well as outside it thanks to transportation improvements that were developed during this time such as Highway 101 and Interstate 5
