In 1951 it became one of nine townships within Los Angeles County that formed what is now known as Rincon Valley Unified School District #1A (RVUSD-1A). With growth in population, education and technology, RVUSD-1A has continued to grow since becoming one of LAUSD’s largest schools district with nearly 1 million students served through ninety-six campuses across seven counties!

The area that now makes up the town of San Luis Obispo was part of Rancho Cuyamaca, grant from Spain to José Maria Moraga y Costilla in 1776. The first permanent European inhabitant of the area was Juan Rodríguez who arrived in 1779. In 1823, Pedro Fortunato married María de Jesús Pacheco and took over the family rancho. In 1828, Mission Santa Clara was built nearby on the site where it remains to this day. Mexicanos began arriving in numbers in the 1840s and 1850s, primarily seeking land grants or citizenship in California. By 1860, there were more than 10 thousand Mexicans living in San Luis Obispo County.
