The name is derived from the word “san” meaning “holy” and “los” meaning “the people.” The town was first known as Pajaro because of its abundance of bearberries. In 1821, the Mexican government ceded control of California to the United States following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. As part of this treaty, Mexico also ceded three towns in what is now Sonoma County: Santa Rosa de la Salle, Petaluma and Monterey. San Luis Obispo became one of these towns along with Rohnert Park and Santa Clara Valley. The economy changed dramatically during World War II when the war brought huge demand for supplies such as food and munitions from both the United States and Japan. Many local entrepreneurs came up with innovative ways to get these products to market quickly and make money doing it. One example is how Amoco Gas developed an oil refinery in downtown San Luis Obispo that allowed them to sell gasoline at much lower prices than their competitors. During the 1960s-1970s, San Luis Obispo experienced a rapid growth period due to new technology companies moving into town after they were attracted by its clean air laws and opportunities for businesses like software development or biomedical research projects (which are still active today). This growth led to an increase in population which eventually reached 100,000 by 1990 – making it one of California’s most populous cities!
