Airguns have been around for centuries and their history can be found in San Luis Obispo, California. The first airguns were made in 1887 by George H. Smith and Charles Fenton, both of whom were working at the San Francisco Arsenal. In 1912, Dr. John Prentice patented a gun that used compressed air to shoot pellets. This gun was called the .22 Rifle Gun and it was used by hunters and shooters throughout the United States until it was replaced by the modern airgun in the early 1930s. The first airgun shooting competitions were held in San Luis Obispo in 1934 and they remain one of the most popular events on Airgunners’ Association (AJA) calendar today. At these competitions, shooters from all over compete against each other to see who is able to shoot the most pellets with an airgun. In 1898, a group of men from San Luis Obispo, California organized the first airgun club in that state. The club was called "The Pistolero's Club" and used pistols to shoot targets. The club was disbanded in 1912 due to lack of membership.
In 1821, the area that would become San Luis Obispo County was part of Alta California. The name “San Luis Obispo” is Spanish for “The Saint Lucy Mountain.” In 1836, the first English settlement in what is now San Luis Obispo County was made at Aptos by Capt. John Brougham and his wife, Mrs. Margaret Ewing. Brougham named the town after St. Lucy, a martyr of Rome who was martyred in 303 AD. In 1849, Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena ordered all white men out of California except those who could prove they were born here or had ancestors from here. Many Anglo-Americans followed this order and decided to move to Mexico City or other Mexican cities where they could live freely and be treated as second class citizens. Some of these people founded towns like Atascadero and Paso Robles along the coast while others set up homes in San Luis Obispo County east of the Sacramento River on land that became sections of Carlsbad Caverns National Park today. In 1850, when most Americans left for Mexico City or other Mexican cities, some families chose to stay behind and start a new community called Monterey near Santa Cruz Creek in what is now Petaluma Township and parts of East Palo Alto Township today (the names are still used). This small town grew slowly until it had a population above 500 in 1880 when it incorporated as an independent city under the name of “Monterey” (now known as Salinas). Thereafter, Monterey experienced rapid growth due to its advantageous location between two major waterways – the Pacific Ocean on one side and Abalone Bay on the other – making it a popular port for shipping goods to markets worldwide including Europe, Asia, Australia and North America. As trade picked up during World War II because so many American soldiers were stationed in nearby Salinas during war time production increased especially shipbuilding which led to new businesses such as data processing company Hewlett-Packard which moved its headquarters from Menlo Park into Monterey in 1957; local restaurant chain Zuni started up with founder Herb Caen;and oil refiner Tesoro built its first refinery there before finally moving into larger facilities adjacent to Mare Island Naval Shipyard just north of downtown Salinas in 2002 Today many people know about both Monterey Bay National Wildlife Refuge and Salinas Downtown through their favorite tourist destinations such as Torrance Beach near Big Sur beachescombing trips down into Lompoc Channel or Hearst Castle tours located around Old Town plaza close by downtown Overpopulated coastal areas caused problems beginning with sea level changes following an eruption at Krakatoa over 100 years ago that flooded much land inland creating tsunami-like waves called Hermosa Beach effects which can still be seen offshore around Point Reyes National Seashore thanks primarily to humans screwing things up royally . Eventually years later (1946) developers began building more housing & subdivisions on top of what had been destroyed by waves & tidal waves resulting not onlyin lossof valuable open space but also serious environmental degradation Oak Knoll Drkwy has become one giant culvert deep inside our county seat causing water drainage backups every 4 months leading eventuallyto SUBMERGED SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY BEACHES Widespread erosion has also occurred eroding Coast Rd from Highway 1 south past Islay Shores down across Blanco Canyon leaving abrupt cliffs exposed at low tide - forming dramatic cliff faces ideal for swimming BARELY LEGAL TO PARK ON POINT REYES AFTERNOON WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM STATE GOVERNMENT despite being privately owned & operated since BEFORE THE COASTLINE WAS PROTECTED . So much for coastalism! Today we have full control over our environment through state/ federal management policies

In 1868, Danish inventor Ole Kirk Christiansen designed the first airgun, which was based on an improved version of his 1851 Enfield rifle. The popularity of airguns began to grow in the early 1900s as improvements were made to their design and performance. In 1949, Finnish engineer Juho Aalto designed and built the world’s first air pistol, which he called the Alkali Pistol (Alkaline Pistol). This unique firearm wasbased on an earlier model created by Aalto himself, which was known as the Alkaline Rifle. The Alkali Pistol enjoyed high popularity among shooters during its time; it remained commercially available until at least 1976. During its heyday, airguns accounted for nearly half of all gun sales worldwide. During World War II, several countries placed restrictions on ammunition purchases due to concerns over potential use by Axis forces within their territory. As a result, demand for airgun ammunition grew significantly; this led to increased production and prices throughout the war years. By 1945, world production of airguns had reached 1 million units per year! After World War II ended, demand for airguns plummeted as firearms became more common and affordable than ever before. However, there still remains significant Demand For Airgun Ammunition today!
The first airguns were designed and built in 1892 by George Stephenson. He designed the first practical firearm that could be fired with a hand gun, the “Atomic Pistol” which was used in the 1893 London Olympics.

In 1912, the City Council enacted a resolution declaring that "San Luis Obispo shall be known as an agricultural center which has made great strides in research and development for agriculture; a center for cultural activities; and a place where high-quality education is available." In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson announced that America would become World War I's entry into the war, and San Luis Obispo began preparations for military mobilization. By 1918, however, America had entered World War I without any expectation of victory and San LuisObispo lost many citizens who served in the war. After years of economic decline and social upheaval following World War II, San LuisObisopo experienced a renaissance beginning in the early 1970s with efforts to redevelop downtown streetscapes into pedestrian-friendly areas.
