The early history of San Leandro dates back to when it was founded as an agricultural town on the east side of San Francisco Bay by Colonel James W. Richardson in 1853 as part of his Rancho Santa Cruz land grant from Mexico City to American settlers. Richardson's goal was to create a new center for agriculture and commerce along the eastern edge of what would become downtown San Francisco Bay Area after years of Spanish colonization and development along the Shoreline Route (later State Route 1). Richardson named his new community "San Leandro" after his brother-in-law Samuel DeWittLongville who settled at nearby Hercules Heights during the mid-19th century and helped develop much of today's Hayward Valley area including Alameda and Contra Costa Counties around that time. In its initial years, San Leandro experienced rapid growth due to its location near two major naval bases: Mare Island Naval Yard on the south shore of Sausalito Bay and Treasure Island Naval Station on Mount Shasta just north of town limits - both areas drawing large numbers of sailors and Marines during World War II service stationed at both facilities. However, like many other developed coastal communities in California during this period, business boomed following World War II but then declined as demand for military services faded away; nevertheless, Richardsons legacy lives on through numerous local businesses that continue to operate today including Jack London Square grocery stores Suburban Market (now Regal), Dell Medical Center (now Kaiser Permanente) and First Baptist Church which replaced Richardsons original smallpox hospital building upon its opening in 1947; also notable are several landmark buildings associated with co-founder John D'Angelo - such as D'Angelo's Drug Store (now known as Home Depot), D'Angelo's Café & Italian Restaurant (now known as Joe's Pizza), D'Angelo's Bar & Grill (now known as Ristorante Di Angelo), and D'Angelo House - all situated within walking distance or easy access via public transportation from downtown SanLeandro proper or from adjacent neighborhoods such asellar/Palo Alto/East Palo Alto/Salinas across Interstate 280 bridges into Silicon Valley
