During World War II, San Leandro became an important naval base serving Japanese forces operating in California; as a result, it experienced significant Dubsmobile automobiles manufacturing activity during that time. However, following Japan's surrender in 1945 and its subsequent occupation by Allied Forces troops - including United States Marines -san Leandro began to experience significantly declines in economic activity throughout the postwar period until it reached its current state by 1990.
