San Leandro is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 57,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the East Bay Area and its downtown district is the largest concentration of high-rise office buildings in North America. The first Europeans to explore what is now San Leandro were Spanish traders who went there from Monterey in 1642 on their way to Napa Valley. They found a rich estuary with salt water and named it "Los Bancos" after one of their trading partners, Rodrigo deBancos. In 1821, American settlers arrived seeking land for ranching operations around Alcatraz Island. A group led by John Cranch built a small cabin at what is now Mowry Street and called it "Foothills". The town began as primarily agricultural but over time became an industrial center with shipbuilding, printmaking and other manufacturing businesses developing along El Camino Real (the old road leading north from Monterey). In 1853–54, when James Wolk began construction of the Telegraph Hill Cable Railway between Oakland and San Francisco (later known as BART), he chose San Leandro as his terminus because it had good passenger rail service then available only on foot or by boat. Wolk's company became one of the early investors in BART; today's Los Angeles County line runs through the heart of downtown San Leandro just east of Wolk's original station site. By 1870, most residents had moved away from Foothills to new homes near Fremont and Union Square because of growing job opportunities in nearby cities such as Oakland and Berkeley. However, some people living near Wolk's original station kept using it for mail service until 1922 when they relocated to an new building on Second Street near Park Avenue South. During World War II much local industry was centered around aircraft production at Beechcraft Corporation Aviation Center south of Hayward Airport; many workers came from outside the area due to war shortages caused by rationing restrictions placed on certain goods during wartime%. After 1945 most large employers left or merged into larger companies; however several smaller firms continued operating until they closed in the late 1960s or 1970s including: Singer Sewing Machine Company (now Jabilahoe Trading Company), Haas Printing & Photography Inc., Western Electric Co., Kaiser Permanente Medical Services Inc., Donnybrook Paper Manufacturing Company etc..
