San Leandro is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 26,241 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco and has a total area of 18.5 square miles (45 km²). It began as an agricultural town on the southern shore of San Francisco Bay. In 1853, it became one of the first cities in California when its incorporation resulted from efforts by businessmen John D. Sloat and James Fenton to create a town within commuting distance of San Francisco. By 1870, it had become an important industrial center with shipbuilding and engineering businesses such as Bethlehem Steel and Alcoa; however, during World War II it became an Army Air Forces training ground for pilots and other aircrews. A large section of downtown was destroyed in 1945 by a fire that burning for three days left over 150 buildings charred and unfit for habitation. The city experienced rapid growth after its incorporation as part of the newly created county seat in 1887. The population increased from 8,000 in 1901 to 24,000 by 1910; nevertheless, many small businesses failed to compete with larger ones until annexation by the city made them easier to start up. Growth continued through World War II as military housing developments were constructed near downtown; but thereafter growth slowed markedly as manufacturing moved away from downtown into new suburbs outside the city limits (Hilton Head Island being one example). Today's revitalization effort focuses on retail corridors such as First Street between Mission Bayou and Jackson Street eastward along Interstate 580 corridor; along Market Street between First Street and Downtown Berkeley; and northeast corner of Harrison Avenue/Folsom Boulevard/Esquimalt Drive leading out into Marin County

In 1847, after years of exploration and discussion, a group of American businessmen founded the town of San Leandro in Contra Costa County. The town was named for San Francisco Bay and its two main points: the Point Reyes National Seashore to the east and the Stockton mudflats to the west. In honor of their ancestor, General John A. Brown, who had fought at Battle of Bunker Hill in 1845, the founders erected a small fortification known as Fort Brown on what is now Harrison Street. The discovery of gold in California in 1848 led to increased traffic along San Leandro's waterfront and throughout the county. Many immigrants arrived during this time; some came directly from Europe while others were brought over on ships that stopped at San Francisco or Tiburon before continuing on upriver. By 1850, many businesses had been established in what is now downtown San Leandro with warehouses and mills lining both banks of the river. A cotton gin was built by James Fenton in 1851 just north ofpresent-day Market Street. The first railroads reachedSanLeandro only a few years later (1865), but they soon became important transportation arteries for goods moving between Northern California and Southern Oregon. The city's size began to grow rapidly during this time – by 1870 it had outgrown its original square block layout into an expanding grid pattern with blocks measuring ten feet wide and one hundred feet long! During World War II, SanLeandro played an important role as an Army Air Force airport serving inland portions of Northern California as well as parts of Nevada and Arizona. Prior to 1945, most commercial activity took place along First Street between El Camino Real (now Mountain View Boulevard) and Townsend Avenue; however, following war-time military restrictions on downtown business districts it became necessary to reevaluate ways to accommodate wartime needs without damaging traditional cultural values which have made SanLeandro one of America's most unique cities!
The first Europeans to visit San Leandro were the Spanish in 1776 and they named it San Francisco de Asís. The first permanent English settlement was at Mission Dolores in 1821. In 1825, a group of entrepreneurs founded the Town of San Lorenzo, which became the city's first incorporated municipality. In 1851, San Lorenzo annexed part of Alameda County, becoming the second city in California to do so. One year later, it split from San Lorenzo and became its own separate city.
