San Leandro is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 17,682 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern coast of San Francisco Peninsula between Tiburon and Sausalito. The first Europeans to visit what is now San Leandro were the Spanish colonists in 1602. The Portuguese set up a mission in 1721 near what is now Pacifica Center. After that, it was part of Alameda County until 1853 when it became part of San Francisco County. The name "San Leandro" was given to the town by General Mariano Vallejo during his military campaign against Native Americans called Operation Breadbasket in 1847. In 1851, John D'Ancrath built a small store on Mission Street in what is now East Palo Alto and named it "D'Ancrath's Store". In 1850, Isaac Brock placed an ad for land for a town on Cape May Road opposite present-day Hayward Bayou. On April 19, 1852 they had their cornerstone laid and named their new town "San Leandro". The first post office was established at the store on July 5th with Wm Hogg as clerk; Hogg's father had opened the original stores there earlier that year. In 1870, three men - Jno Huckaby (1824-1901), Wm Bickford (1827-1900) and Orson Welles - started building a wharf next toened by them along Hayward Bayou north of today's downtown area where they would sail boats up and down the bay for trade with China and other parts of Asia

The Panic of 1893 deepened when prices for labor plummeted due to a combination of drought conditions across California as well as falling production from mines in Nevada (the "Kern Gold Rush"). This caused many businesses to close their doors; San Leandro's population dropped from over 6,000 to 1,500 between 1892 and 1895 alone. Businesses closed even faster after President Grover Cleveland raised tariffs on Chinese goods in 1895 to head off another round of immigration into America while simultaneously trying to contain deflationary forces throughout most western countries at this time (see: "The Gilded Age" by Timothy Snyder). As a result of these eventsSan Leandro went through some tough times until 1915 when it regained its prior prominence with passage of Proposition 8 which allowed gay marriages statewide. Finally beginning in 1983 with passage of Proposition 13 - which approved Measure T -san leandreans experienced one more period of growth until 2000 when its population peaked at around 26,700 people according to the 2010 census estimate
The first Europeans to enter San Leandro were the Portuguese in 1821, who named the area San Francisco after Prince Francisco of Argentina. The United States acquired California in 1846, and in 1851 the state Legislature changed the name to Oakland. In 1868, a group of entrepreneurs founded the city’s first store, although it wasn’t until 1893 that Oakland became an incorporated city. The 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed much of Oakland, but also created new opportunity for businesses and people alike. The city has since recovered and has become one of America’s most vibrant metropolises with a growing economy and diverse cultural experiences.
