San Leandro, California is a city on the San Francisco Peninsula in Northern California. The population was 23,453 at the 2010 census. Located in the East Bay Area of San Francisco County, it is part of the San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The original inhabitants of what is now San Leandro were Native Americans. In 1851, they formed a town called Rancho San Leandro and sold land to people from Illinois and other states who began settling there in large numbers beginning in 1856. By 1870, over 60% of the residents were foreign born with Germans making up the largest group at 26%. The influx of workers helped drive down prices for housing and businesses throughout much of early 20th century Oakland and San Francisco. However, when Japan became an empire following World War II, trade with Japan increased greatly and prices for goods shipped from Asia plummeted as American shipping stopped operations. This led to a wave of migration from inner cities to rural areas throughout California during the postwar era which has caused many changes to modern day San Leandro including becoming one of Silicon Valley's most ethnically diverse cities In 1972, SanLeandro become an unincorporated area within Alameda County along with Newark (Newark had been annexed by Alameda County in 1912) due to pressure from then-Governor Ronald Reagan's administration to reduce local government size so that more attention could be focused on larger counties such as Alameda and Contra Costa. In 1976 it merged into Hayward (at that time part of Contra Costa County). As part as result of its annexation by Hayward, san leandro also gained city rights which gave it some limited powers such as planning and zoning decisions but did not give it control over its own finances or infrastructure like water or sewer systems. The City Council still exercises governing authority through ordinances passed by vote instead than through consent decrees which allow officials discretion over how funds are spent even though they may be lower quality because they have less power under law

Today,San Leandro is considered an ultra-modern city with world-class architecture and amenities. It is home to two universities - UC Berkeley and Stanford - as well as numerous shopping malls and other popular tourist destinations.
The first permanent European settlement in San Leandro was a group of Spaniards who called themselves the California Company, which arrived in 1776. The company was formed to purchase land from the Mexican government and build a road from Mexico City to San Francisco. The first European settlers were not very successful and only lasted for a few years. In 1842, American Commodore John D. Sloat built an fort on what is now Second Street in order to protect ships sailing through the Bay Bridge Strait. San Leandro became part of Alameda County in 1847 and then Oakland County in 1854.
