In 1847, the first permanent settler in San Leandro was George W. Richardson, who leased land from the Santa Clara Valley Tomahawk Band of Mission Indians. In 1851, Richardson erected a log cabin on what is now Oakland Avenue and Mud Lane. The first school in San Leandro was opened in 1852 by Mrs. Maria Sanchez with six students. The first post office was established in 1853, and the town received its charter from the California Legislature on February 12, 1854. The town's growth was spurred by its location at the mouth of the Danforth River, which led to its nickname "The Harbor City." By 1860,San Leandro had a population of 1,500 residents and boasted a public ferry service to connect it with San Francisco Bay Area cities like Alameda and Emeryville. The arrival of railroads in mid-century helped spur development as well; by 1870, San Leandro had become one of eastern Californias most important transportation hubs. During World War II (1939-1945), San Leandro played an integral role inthe war effort as both a military munitions production center and shipping point for troops and supplies entering and leaving Southern California during Operation Overlord. In 1945, following World War II's conclusion,San Leandro experienced rapid postwar growth as businesses relocated here from other parts of California due to easy access to education and job opportunities. Today, much of downtown is still filled with warehouses that were once used for ammunition manufacturing; many streets approach their present widths because of this history.
