San Leandro incorporated as a city on November 3, 1868. Due to its location at the mouth of Delta Bayou (now called Mare Island), San Leandro grew into one of Northern Californias most important commercial and industrial cities during the late 19th century and early 20th century. The city experienced dramatic growth during World War II as an important munitions manufacturing center for both America and Japan; however, following the war's end many factories closed down and wide-scale job loss followed. Today, much of downtown San Leandro is composed of historic warehouses dating from before World War II which have been converted into mixed-use buildings housing various businesses such as restaurants, bars, retail storesand offices; while some older warehouses remain dilapidated and vacant
The first Europeans to reside in San Leandro were two Franciscan monks, Father Junipero Serra and Father Francisco Vallejo, who arrived in 1777. The area was part of the Spanish Empire until 1821 when it became part of Mexican territory. In 1848, California was purchased by the United States from Mexico and the area became a U.S. Territory. In 1850, San Leandro became an incorporated town and remained so until 1959 when it become a city under the jurisdiction of Berkeley, California.
