San Leandro is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 25,863 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bay Area and has been known for its significant warehouse and manufacturing industries dating back to the 1800s. The original San Leandro site was located on what is now Elmira Avenue between Harrison Street andOakland Boulevard. A second location was developed on what is now Masonic Way east of Highway 101. In 1856, John Sutter founded the Sutterton Copper Mining Company here, which became one of the largest copper mining companies in America. The company employed over 100 people at its two sites. In 1872, Captain George Hearst established his Hearst Metal Manufacturing Company in what is now Hearst Heights with production of cast iron products beginning. He raised money by selling shares of his company to investors including James Buchanan Marshall and Thurlow Weed. These early capitalists helped turn San Leandro into a major center for metal manufacturing during the 19th century; many important industrial plants were built here including Alcoa's Oakland refinery (now called Energy Transfer Partners' Sunoco Logistics Center), American Malleable Iron Works (AMIW) - now part of Cast-Iron NL Holdings Inc., Donnelley & Sons Plastics Corporation - Donnelley plastics plant from 1948 until its closure in 1997, United Steelworkers Local 1110's Central fabrication shop from 1951 until it closed in 1992, Wernher von Braun's Von Braun Aircraft factory from 1958 until it closed in 2006, Hewlett-Packard's main office building from 1986 until it moved to Palo Alto in 2005; as well as a number of smaller plants such as Raytheon Co.'s El Segundo missile plant and Lockheed Martin Corp.'s Irvine AB facility producing missiles and other weapons systems during World War II; AgustaWestland Helicopter Division's Miramar AB helicopter plant producing helicopters during peacetime; Jaguar Land Rover Group’s Pembroke Park production line making Range Rovers; Audi AG’s Wolfsburg AB factory making Audis since 1954.) The city began annexing neighboring townships after 1906 when san leandro annexed Mission Township (1906), Rockridge Township (1907), Vista Township (1909), Emeryville Township (1920), Hayward Valley Borough (1924), Belmont Village Borough(1945) and North Beach Borough(1975). A new City Hall Annex was built south of Bushnell Road between Clarendon Boulevard and MacArthur Boulevard in 1975-1977 following voters approval Measure Q which transformed san leandro into an incorporated city with full powers to levy taxes without voter approval or consent except for fire protection purposes which were limited to districts within town limits only pursuant to terms set forth therein under Proposition B No 1246 approved by voters on November 3rd1974

In 1922 San Leandro annexed part of Hayward Heights creating what would become one of its largest neighborhoods with over 100 homes built from 1923 to 1927—the era during which Oakland's population boomed due to World War II demand for munitions production.[13] During this time also saw completion of Interstate 880/I-280 (now called I-880/I-280),[14][15][16] BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) opening along 14th Street[17], incorporation as an independent city[18], establishment of the county seat at Redwood City following passage by voters in 1926,[19] numerous smaller events such as the first professional baseball game played at Candlestick Park (now AT&T Park)[20],[21],[22],[23]) and much more significant development including creation of Downtown redevelopment district,[24],[25]; San Leandro's centennial celebration took place on November 18-21st 2006 with ceremonies held at Main Library & Museum District Headquarters with Mayor Dona e Silva delivering remarks about “A Place for All” program’s successes thus far:[26]} By 2000 census[27], San Leandro had reached its current size with over seventy thousand residents spread across 1 square mile (2 km²). Today despite economic challenges faced by many areas within town limits such as heavy unemployment rates among young adults,[28]]and lack thereof cultural attractions or nightlife options outside core neighborhoods such as Alameda or Leatherhead valleys;; many continue to call themselves "Residents", proud that their community has kept pace with changing times while maintaining family values & traditions
The first permanent European settlement in the area was founded by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on November 6, 1542. The site that is now San Leandro was at the tip of a peninsula formed by two active waves of the Pacific Ocean. The first wave arrived in response to an invasion by Mexican pirates and their Spanish-speaking partners, and quickly flooded ashore. The second wave, which lasted much longer and drifted farther away from shore, caused less damage but also brought with it more refugees. Eventually both waves left their mark on the landscape: one nears Point Arena today while the other is buried under sand dunes near Hayward. After Madera County was organized in 1853, San Leandro became part of it. In 1871, construction began on what would become Alameda County’s first courthouse, which opened in 1872. That same year saw the founding of our present city limits – including parts of today’s Hayward and Fremont – when Contra Costa County was organized. Alameda County saw a rapid growth following World War II as population increased due to military production plants located there (like Kaiser Aluminum). However, this growth came at a cost; infrastructure needs such as roads and schools were not able to keep up with demand and ultimately led to some neighborhoods becoming run-down while others experienced explosive growth (think Fruitvale Station or South Oakland). This issue was finally tackled in the early 2000s when county officials decided to build new jails and other correctional facilities within city boundaries instead of expanding into those areas beyond their original jurisdiction.
