The first Europeans to set foot in San Leandro were the Portuguese, who arrived in 1602. They built a small mission on Castle Island, which they called Our Lady of the Rocks. The English also came to America in 1602 and founded Portsmouth, California. In 1685, the Spanish began an exploratory journey through Central California and named this area Santa Fe de la Cruz because of its resemblance to Santa Fe, Spain. The English renamed it San Francisco after their then-new settlement in North America.
