The city became a center for gun manufacturing due to its location at the mouth of the Santa Clara River and its access to raw materials. In 1825, three brothers founded what is now known as Smith & Wesson Firearms Corporation in San Leandro. This company became one of America's largest firearm manufacturers and retailers.
San Leandro is a city located in San Francisco County, California, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 67,145. The city was founded on December 29, 1851 by John Blythe and James Phelan as an agricultural outpost on Rancho San Lorenzo. In 1868 it became part of the City of San Francisco. It is now one of California's most populous cities and its economic center. The first people to permanently settle in what is now San Leandro were the Ohlone Indians from central California. They arrived in small groups over many years and gradually acquired land around what is now downtown SanLeandro. In 1776 Spanish Captain Vicente Nieto organized a party of 10 men led by José Joaquin Moraga to explore this new area but they never returned because they found no water resources there and their horses had died from thirst. In 1821 Englishman John Blythe discovered well-watered ground near present-day Hayward Fault along with other members of his company including Nathaniel Hawthorne who named it after himself, Samuel Slater (1772-1840), Alfred Hutton (1800-1859), Andrew Jordon (1814-1897) and Hiram Maxim (1824-1912). This area later became known as Rancho San Lorenzo de Alameda which included what is today downtownSanLeandro as well as some areas that are today east Oakland and north Fremont Avenue between Hayward Fault Boulevard and High Street. On December 29th, 1851 Dean Sayers appointed Mr Phelan as town recorder for the new town site which he called "Rancho Palo Alto" due to its high hills overlooking Livermore Valley northwest of wherepresent day Hayward Fault crosses into Livermore Valley - about 12 miles east from present daySan Leandro. On February 14th, 1852 Mr Phelan filed articles of incorporation with the State of California for a new town site that would become known as "SanLeandro". The original plat showed 24 lots measuring three feet wide by four feet deep with a single house or cabin on each lot and two plazas or streets running through them totaling six blocks long - one facing south theneast towards Point Reyes National Seashore while another faced northeast towards Milpitas Bayou though both streets ran parallel to Pacific Coast Highway until they split just east of Santa Clara Street at Hercules Avenue before rejoining each other again just west of Main Street - soon becoming known simply as "Plaza de la Plaza" or simply "Plaza". It wasn't until 1861 when Doniphan & Son Mercantile Company started selling goods at Plaza de la plaza including flour, lead paint etc., that residents began referring to their community either as "San Leandro" or simply "El Paraiso". By 1865 Elparaiso had replaced Plaza de la Plaza on maps because it gave more space for businesses within limits imposed by County supervisors at that time since Elpiarasio Creek filled up most if not allof Plazas real estate subsequent to its creation in 1851 subjecting Anglo citizens living thereto forced eviction during times when public works projects were being authorized without following guidelines set forth by Supervisor George Parmelee Sr.. San Leandro is a city located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, in Alameda County, California. The population was 66,815 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth most populous city in California. The first European to visit what is now San Leandro was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 8, 1542. He recorded his sighting of San Francisco Bay from Point Reyes Hill and called it "Nueva población" (New Settlement), and expedition members used this name for many years before settling on its current name in 1835. At that time, there were only 40 residents living hereabouts and most of them were fishermen or farmers who grew crops or raised livestock. In 1851, Don José Castro settled here with his family after arriving in America as part of an ill-fated attempt by Mexicans to start a new dynasty in California. With Mexican land grants stretching into northern California, Don José had an opportunity to extend his holdings far beyond what he actually did because during Mexican rule lands were leased at absurdly low values - as little as $1 per acre - so he obtained some valuable property including much of what currently makes up San Leandro Peninsula. Don José's heirs continued to occupy and improve their holdings until about 1875 when they sold all but 3 acres for $5 per acre to John Dromgoole who built a large rancho consisting of 17 square miles (46 km2) and employed over 200 men including 30 Proctor brothers who helped build roads and other infrastructure within the area which has since attracted heavy industry such as shipbuilding, aircraft manufacturing and oil refineries today. Dromgoole also founded two schools which became world-renowned; one known as Don Jose School District No. 1 (now KIPP Oakland), while another still serving students today as Diablo Valley Unified School District #2 High School; both buildings are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places). In 1905 Dromgoole donated 4 more acres (16 km²)to make way for BART station where it stands today adjacent to El Sobrante Boulevard just south of Interstate 680/Upper Parnassus Avenue near Lake Merritt wetlands Preserve between Eastshore Boulevard & MacArthur Boulevard
