Binoculars have been around for centuries and their history in San Leandro is a reflection of that. Some of the earliest examples of binoculars can be found in China. One example is an undated artifact from the 6th century BC that shows people using a type of instrument known as a “tang” to view objects at a distance. This type of instrument was used for surveying and map-making purposes. During World War II, American soldiers were issued with two types of binoculars: those used for spotting targets during combat, and those used for viewing things such as troop movements and bombers on planes. These binoculars were called “Higgins zero” after General George A Higgins who developed them during World War I. The use of these devices helped American commanders see over large areas without having to rely on visual landmarks or enemy fire

San Leandro is a city in California, United States. The population was 66,353 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern coast of San Francisco Bay and is east of Oakland. The area now comprising San Leandro was first populated by the Ohlone people in prehistoric times. In 1851, it became part of Alameda County and was incorporated as a town on December 12, 1872. The name "San Leandro" originated from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning "place of many trees." The city has been known for its manufacturing and engineering industries since its founding, and it remains one of the most important economic engines in California today. Manufacturing sectors include automobiles, aerospace products, plastics and rubber products, food processing and distribution systems, shipbuilding and other maritime services. Other major industries include information technology (finance company Google), healthcare (hospitality company Marriott), education (university system UC Berkeley) and professional services (accountants KPMG). The physical extent of San Leandro makes it difficult to determine just how populous it once was; between 1800 and 1850 there were only about 10 residents per square mile in what is now downtown San Leandro! However given that the population density for Bay Area cities measured at 100 people per square mile exceeds that for any other U.S. metropolitan area by more than threefold (!), even if we accept that numbers below 50k during this time were typical[1], then perhaps anywhere from 25k-50k would be more accurate given current densities within & around downtowns across various BART stations within walking distance - making up to 80% or so of present daySanLeandros mainline commercial district[2]. In whatever case – whether modest or massive – when compared to contemporaries like Boston or Philadelphia & their respective “inner Harbor” waterfront neighborhoods enclosing much larger populations (& attendant infrastructure) over 1 million strong (~ mid 19th century),SanLeandro’s emergence as a bona fide center of heavy industry & commerce must have seemed pretty significant indeed! If anything its early success may have helped lay the groundwork for later urban sprawl within easily accessible commuting distance… something which continues unabated to this very day!
In 1853, the first post office in San Leandro was established. In 1876, the city became a county and in 1932 it became a state-level city.
