This society used rifles to shoot ducks out of baskets placed overhanging branches near the town square (now known as Plaza Mayor). By 1890 there were three rifle societies operating in San Juan Capistrano: one formed by Captains James Purdy and Hiram Sperry; another by Captains Charles Aiken and Samuel Morse; and finally the third organization by Captains Edwin Leland and Augustus Bertozzi was called “The Riflemen of America’s Outpost” because it consisted only of American Rifleman officers from California detachments stationed at various posts around the country. Captain Harry Fenton organized a new rifle society in 1895 under his own name called “The United States Rifle Association” with fifty-eight members which became operational on May 1st 1896 at The Arsenal building located on Orange Avenue between First Street and Second Street. This society used firearms for target practice instead of competitive shooting events like those held earlier at quarries or churches belonging to different clubs because these events drew large crowds that could be disruptive to other activities taking place within the community including religious services being conducted at that time outside onto public squares where people could also be seen chatting or playing games while their ammunition was unloaded on benches inside while onlookers watched pistols being reloaded inside buildings nearby! The area that includes today's San Juan Capistrano was part of Rancho Santa Margarita, given to Mexico by Spanish Governor Felipe de Neve during the Mexican-American War. In 1821, Mexican citizens Manuel Garza and José María Pacheco purchased Rancho San Juan Capistrano from the Baca family. The land that now includes San Juan Capistrano was part of Yuma County, Arizona Territory. In 1847, American Missionaries established a Catholic mission in what is now known as La Mesa because they needed a place to land their missionary children after passage through California had been blocked by Mother Teresa of Calcutta. On July 11, 1860, when Californian troops attacked Mexico City from the north and east, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna ordered all Californians west of the Alamo to cross the river at El Palo Alto for protection; this action greatly widened California's population and threw open much of its interior to settlement by non-native people who were hostile towards Mexicans. On November 8, 1860 Mexican authorities burned down missions around Sonoma County including La Mesa Mission and founded an independent town called Placerville on November 10th following a council meeting held at la Mesa Church on November 7th which decided not to secede from Mexico but instead join forces with Santa Clara County againstMexican forces operating in Central Valley towns such as Benicia and Sacramento (the Battle of Montezuma Bridge). Aftereffects included heavily armed vigilante groups roaming throughout Northern California terrorizing settlers while also bolstering local Mexican resistance movement against Anglo encroachment into their lands. This event led to increased Anglo settlement across Southern California which continued until 1910 when Imperial Japanese troops conquered Most Wanted list posters listing wanted Americans calling for their capture went up all over Southern California resulting in large scale arrests leading to many deportations especially among citrus growers who were unable or unwilling share data with Japanese military forces
