San Juan Capistrano is a small city in Orange County, California. The population was 7,752 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Juan Peninsula and was founded by Spanish colonists in 1795. The United States Navy's Submarine Base San Juan Capistrano is located in the city. The name San JuanCapistrano means "San John's Bay" in Spanish and it was given to the peninsula by Captain José de Lara after landing there on 2 July 1795 during his visit to Santa Barbara County. On 15 September 1810, Commodore James K. Polk sailed into the bay and anchored off of the peninsula, becoming America's first envoy to Europe under President George Washington. A year later Commodore Perry landed here with his squadron of Perry's ships on an official visit to Mexico City before proceeding northward around Cape Horn. In 1821, General Pedro Cámpora captured Mission San Diego de Alcalá from Mexican military forces under Ramón Maguire while Blockading Monterey Bay; this event led to increased American interest in missions throughout California as well as missionary efforts throughout North America including efforts here at Mission San Juan Capistrano which began in 1795 with Father Junípero Serra as its first pastor (the original mission buildings were completed posthumously). San Juan Capistrano, California is a small city located in Southern California. The population was 3,748 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego-Tijuana metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlers in what is now San Juan Capistrano were Spanish Franciscans who founded the Mission Santa Clara de la Concepción on October 14, 1769. They named their new mission after Saint John of Nepomuk (John the Baptist) because he had been baptised there two years earlier on September 12th, 1768. The Franciscans built a chapel and school nearby and started to preach the Gospel to Native Americans who lived along the coast from Guerrero to Baja California Sur. In 1821, when Mexico won its independence from Spain, Mexican officials renamed San JuanCapistrano "San Diego" after GeneralMexico's newly created capital in that year. In 1848, following US annexation of Mexico as part ofthe Compromise of 1850, San Francisco became part of California and Rivero continued as its first mayor. In 1861 Californians voted to change their state name to Los Angeles County in order to reflect their growing dominance over southern California; Rivero opposed this but lost his mayoral seat in a unanimous vote against his wishes. In 1886–87 American inventor/businessman George Westinghouse built an electric streetcar system called Pacific Electric through most of southern California including parts now located in San Juan Capistrano; it was one of the first transportation methods available for people living near large cities like Los Angeles or Phoenix back then (it only ran between Union Station and downtown). After World War II local residents helped build Air Force Base Barstow which later became known as Victorville Airport - home base for numerous military aircraft during World War II and today used mostly for civilian purposes by both air traffic controllers and general aviation pilots flying out of nearby Burbank Airport (now Riverside County Airport). It was completed in 1777 and served as a religious center for the Ohlone people. In 1821, the Mexican government ordered all missions in California to be secularized. The San Juan Capistrano Mission property became part of what is now Orange County.
