In 1926, San Juan Capistrano was founded by the Spanish settlers as a small fishing village. By 1930, it had a population of over 500 people and was known for its hunting and shooting preserves. In 1936, the town voted to become an incorporated municipality. In 1951, the United States Air Force built an airbase in the town for use by bomber crews during World War II. The base left a lasting legacy on San Juan Capistrano with numerous paved roads and military installations still present today. One of the most famous residents of San Juan Capistrano was Jack London who lived there from 1899-1902. While living in San José de la Frontera (later renamed Paso Robles), California he developed his writing career through taking short stories and novels to local bookstores throughout Southern California. He also wrote articles for local newspapers while living in Paso Robles. In 1927, three friends who were members of the Arroyo Rifle Club decided to start a pistol club at their house on Via de las Madres which would shoot at ranges around town. The first meeting was held on October 3rd and they called themselves "The Pistol Club". They shot handguns only until 1933 when they started using rifles because that is when they realized that it would be more difficult to get arrested if they were caught shooting pistols within city limits (which at that time included much ofSan Juan Capistrano). They continued this policy until 1945 when they finally stopped shooting pistols altogether because doing so made them targets for criminals looking for easy money! The first gun store in San Juan Capistrano opened up in 1937 by two brothers named Gus & Harry Borenstein who sold firearms both periodicals including "Action Shooting" magazine as well as shotguns, pistols, revolvers and rifles from their store located at 521 E Valencia Street which remain open now as Harbor Guns Outlet Store & Gun Shop - one of only four remaining stores open between 1923-2018 in America that sells Firearms ONLY!

In 1821, it became part of Mexican territory and was annexed by United States during War for Independence. In 1848, it became a part of newly created State of California following US victory over Mexico in that war. The City Council was first organized in 1865 and Mayor Edward Haggerty served from that date until his death in 1929. He was succeeded by Hiram Bingham who served from 1930 to 1942 and then Agnes Nourse Bayh who served from 1944 to 1960. On December 7, 1960, Mrs. Bayh became the first female mayor when she won election to succeed Haggerty after he resigned to become Lieutenant Governor of California. She held office until her retirement on January 3, 1969 effective upon passage of Proposition 209 which granted voting rights to all citizens regardless of race or color within 12 months after enactment date ( November 16th 1959). During her time as mayor she successfully promoted development along Highway 66 which ran through much of her city including founding of several hospitals such as Harborview Medical Center and Valley View Hospital now both owned and operated by University Health System; creation/promotion/funding for many other local initiatives such as arts programs & extension services for low-income residents;etc.;and work toward preservation/preservation/ enhancement/ upgradeof various aspects & features associated with downtown core area - generally considered an anchor attraction regionally The chemical industry has been a large presence here throughout its history with jobs coming primarily from production sites at Scripps Ranch near La Jolla and Point Loma Naval Air Station just offshore about 4 miles NW cornering HWY 66S between them (formerly known as Big Oak Flat Naval Air Station) today’s SJP airport located past Menlo Park off SR-171 about 8 miles SW cornering HWY 101 near Gilroy just beyond I-5 exit ramp

The first permanent European settlement in what is now San Juan Capistrano was founded in 1769 by Captain Alonso de la Hoz. The area that is now San Juan Capistrano was part of the missions of Nuestra Señora de las Angeles and Nuestra Señora de Jesús, both located on the present-day border of Orange County and Riverside County. The mission system ended with the Spanish–American War in 1898. In 1821, Anthony Abbot organized a group of Englishmen who decided to settle down in central California after hearing about gold discoveries near Yosemite National Park. They named their new town after one of their own: San Juan Bautista, California. In 1846, following Mexican annexation of California, General Antonio López y Mendoza ordered all American settlements be destroyed except for Abbot's San Juan Bautista. The town was abandoned again in 1849 when gold mining operations stopped because of lack of water supplies. A post office was established at San Luis Obispo serving the townspeople until 1860; it then moved to Santa Ana until 1870; and finally to San Juan Capistrano until 1916.
