In 1965, the society acquired the old Courthouse on 3rd Avenue. In 1969, they moved into their current building on 1st Street which is now used as the museum and archives. In 1992, the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society became an affiliate member of the California State Historical Association.
The history of San Juan Capistrano, California dates back to 1769 when Mission San José was founded on the peninsula by Father Junípero Serra. In 1821, the town was named after Saint John of Nepomuceno who donated land for a mission and parish. The population of San Juan Capistrano increased from 100 in 1851 to 3,000 by 1860. By 1880, the town had outgrown its original facilities and inadequate transportation became an issue. A group of entrepreneurs led by Rafael Rivera purchased a piece of property east of the missions and began developing it into what is now known as the downtown area. The growth of the city caused problems with water supply, which resulted in many annexation requests from other towns until they were finally granted in 1907. This gave rise to one of California's largest cities with a population over 20,000 people at its peak. The great fire that burned down much Of San Fernando Valley in 1906 destroyed most evidence of this earlier development but left behind an interesting legacy including several architecture landmarks such as Mission Santa Clara and Mission Santiago de Compostela churches still standing today.

The original expansion mount was a white powder magazine that allowed the M1 Garand to be attached to an A3 tripod. It also had two rubber bands that would hold the rifle in place while it was being photographed or videoed. The mount allowed for up to three rounds of ammunition to be carried on the gun. In 1974, a newexpansion mount was developed by US Military which combined an American Made 410i recoil spring with an all metal platform and became known as the M-LOK (Mil-Lok) system. This system allowed for attachment of a variety of Picatinny rail systems including Weaver rails, and allows for four rounds per mag with no need for one Rubber Band round keeper. Later in 2007, Colt began production of their own M-LOK compatible receiver extension tube called "The Warthog" which provides a more versatile mounting solution allowing users to attach optics, lasers, lights and accessories without having to remove the entire firearm from its stock position.
The city of San Juan Capistrano, California was founded in 1848 by Spanish settlers. The city was named after Saint John the Baptist, who is considered the patron saint of theCapistrano Mission. The mission was founded on a small island in what is now Santa Ana County, California. The island was situated near present-day San Juan Capistrano and Mission San Luis Obispo. In 1849, the Spanish government designated part of Rancho Niguel as a san Fernando missionseed to Anglo farmers. By 1852, only about 20 acres remained undeveloped in what is now downtown San Juan Capistrano. In 1884, voters inSan Juan Capistrano approved incorporation as a city and citizens voted to rename it "San Juan Capistrano." In 1912, during World War I, General George Smedley Butler captured Antietam Creek from the Confederate Army at Battle of Gettysburg and donated it to the City of San JuanCapistrano for use as an armory and parade ground. The east side of Antietam Creek between Railroad Avenue and Park Boulevard became Butler Park while west side became University Avenue. In 1924, Mayor James Alesi recommended that downtown be redeveloped into an "economic center" with shopping malls, office buildings and other large businesses. The resulting plan called for demolishing most of old downtown but preserving most significant architecture including the former capitol building which would become home to San Francisco State University's School of Law until it moved to Berkeley in 2001. Over time much new development has taken place within walking distance or car trips from central business district: including Regency Ballroom nightclub (2005), First Congregational Church (1994) and Pico Rivera Casino Resort & Conference Center (1989). In recent years there have been plans for another major redevelopment project - this time centered around creating a new park across from Interstate 5 known as Gateway plaza / Park Square - however no progress has been made since 2002 when dense commercial development beganblocking views of the square from Interstate 5 over nearby high-rise apartments
In 1802, Commodore John D. Sloat claimed San Juan Capistrano for the United States. The Spanish mission on the island was abandoned in 1824, and the land became a U.S. military base during the Mexican-American War of 1846-48. In 1870, California became part of the United States as a result of the Compromise of 1850. On July 14, 1898, Mexico responded to an American request for intervention in Cuba with an invasion of that country that led to World War I and opened up what is now Central America to American settlement and influence. The population of San Juan Capistrano increased rapidly from its original 180 residents in 1800 to 3,000 by 1900 due to immigration from all over South America and Asia; by 1910 it had reached 10,000 people. The San Juan Capistrano Post Office was established in 1909 (now known as ZIP code 92750).
