San Juan Capistrano is a small town in southern California, located on the banks of the San Joaquin River. The population was 7,700 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now San Juan Capistrano was Father Junipero Serra in 1769 when he erected a mission chapel there. In 1818, Mission San Fernando de Asís was founded by Father José Gomez and Mission Santa Margarita de Loreto by Father Francisco Báez. The missions were combined into one jurisdiction in 1834 and renamed as Mission San Juan Capistrano. A new church was built on October 15, 1864 and dedicated to Our Lady of Casa Blanca (or "Diosa del Rosario") by Bishop José Gomez. In 1925, a fire destroyed most of the buildings within the mission complex including many of the statues and paintings that had been assembled over years. Although rebuilt over time with support from private donations and state funds, much damage still remains today due to vandalism and arson which has increased in recent years. The name was later changed to Acapulco because of the abundance of seafood there. In 1776, following the Mexican-American War, Mexico ceded California to Spain and San Juan Capistrano became part of the new colony of California. In 1821, after years of conflict over land ownership and governance, California became a United States territory. On July 4, 1846, during the Mexican-American War, General Zachary Taylor's forces burned down part of the old mission buildings at San Juan Capistrano before coming into town for supplies. The ruins remain today as a reminder of that event. Throughout its history, San JuanCapistrano has been a center for education and culture. In 1875, two years after becoming an incorporated community under state law, SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO COLLEGE was established on Paseo del Norte in what is now downtown Santa Barbara. That same year also saw the founding of THE LOS ANGELES TIMES SCHOOL DISTRICT which still operates out of campus today. Today's economy is based largely on tourism and professional services such as engineering and legal work; however some small businesses continue to thrive due to their location within easy access to major highways or shopping malls nearby
San Juan Capistrano was founded in 1769 by theenos, a group of Spanish missionaries. The town quickly became an important stop on the road between Baja California and San Diego. In 1821, San Juan Capistrano became part of Mexico City and was renamed Ciudad de México.
