The history of San Juan Capistrano, California goes back over 400 years. The area that is now San Juan Capistrano was originally inhabited by the Mono people. In 1821, Spanish missionaries arrived in the area and began to establish missions. The first mission was founded in 1781 and named Mission Santa Cruz de la Antigua Iglesia. In 1821, the second mission, Mission San Jose de las Calaveras, was founded. The Missions were a Protestant church and school system until 1830 when they became Catholic churches. From 1830-1851, the Missions were closed due to lack of funds and because of a quarantine imposed by Mexico on California due to an outbreak of smallpox there. However, they reopened in 1851 due to American military intervention in California and remained open until their closure again in 1906. During their time asMissionaries, the Spanish missionaries also built various residences including El Pueblo (the present daySan Juan Capistrano). Many people who live in San Juan Capistrano today are descended from these Missionaries who lived here during their time as missionaries or later moved along with the local populace. Today, much of what is found within modern-day San JuanCapistrano dates back to when it was part of Rancho Santa Margarita which was Granted land by Captain José Garza y Ruiz on November 30th, 1853 for $5 per acre ($120 per km2). Today’s rancho boundaries stretch from east side of I-805 southward to west side of State Route 164; northward along SR 164 to its junction with US 101; eastward along US 101 towards downtown Los Angeles County; and southward past downtown LA County into Orange County where it meets SR 163 near umpqua River Valley Inn & Spa where there is evidence of human habitation dating back 1 million years! Rancho Santa Margarita stretched from what is now easternmost corner of Orange County all the way upriver through Stanislaus County into western Kern County before terminating at what is now Ventura County’s southern border! On February 26, 1930 by proclamation of Franklin D. Roosevelt as President of the United States, this lands were redesignated as an Indian reservation with headquarters at Chino Hills in neighboring Riverside County under the Bureau of Indian Affairs jurisdiction. The last white person to live in San Juan Capistrano died on December 6th 1978 when Alfred Kapp Sr., owner andoperator of Kapp's grocery store at 3016 N El Camino Real closed his business because he could not get Federal recognition for his land title dispute with then-city Manager Donny Ladda over water rights on a creek running through town center which locals claimed flowed directly into their property line There have been no permanent residents since 1978; present day buildings date back to 1926
