San Juan Capistrano (Spanish: San José de la Laguna), also known as simply "San Juan", is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 27,311 at the 2010 census and is the second largest city in Orange County after Los Angeles. The first Europeans to visit San Juan were members of an expedition led by Gaspar de Portolà on September 11, 1769. They named the bay after Saint John of God because they had found a smallan idol there. Spanish missionaries founded two missions there – Nuestra Señora de las Conchas and Nuestra Señora de los Dolores – in 1821 and 1824, respectively. In 1868, Don José Antonio Urrutia moved his Mission Santa Ana from Orinda to San Juan Capistrano. The mission was destroyed by fire in 1892; however, Father Miguel López-Alcaraz rebuilt it with private funds and it still stands today. The post office at San Juan Capistrano opened on December 7, 1872. It became a part of the City of Orange on January 1, 1907 following its annexation by that city. The original town boundaries are still used today for zoning purposes; for example: Villa Park to the north, Corona del Mar to the east, and Tustin to the south-east (the current boundaries were set when Riverside County was created). In 1916–1917 several Hispanic American soldiers from World War I served as scouts under General Edward Mifflin at Camp Pendleton in San Juan Capistrano during their stay before returning home across Southern California where they helped organize military units fighting for Mexico against Ulysses S Grant's forces during World War I which includes some who later Settled in Pomona Valley near Ventura

The San Juan Capistrano area was first settled by the Tongva people in the 18th century. At that time, their village was located near present-day Cathedral City on the south bank of the San Joaquin River. By 1800, however, the Tongva had all but disappeared and their place in San Juan Capistrano's history is largely due to Spanish colonialism. In 1795, Governor Manuel Nieto de la Vega granted land to a group of Franciscans who named themselves "Los Padres". The friars built a small chapel on the site of what is now Mission San José (1795) and began missionary work among the local population. In 1821, after Mexican independence was proclaimed, Los Padres assumed control of Mission Santa Cruz from Spain. They also began construction on Mission San José (1821), which became known as La Purísima Concepción ("The Purest Conception"). Over time, although there were sporadic missionary activity until 1846 when Father Junípero Serra arrived with his Franciscan Order, La Purísima Concepción grew increasingly secularized over time. In 1862–63 Father Alvaro Obregon replaced Serra as director of missions in California; he ordered that all religious institutions be closed except for La Purísima Concepción. As a result of this change in policy, throughout much of Californias colonial period most residents lived within walking distance of one or more missions/conventicles. A series of devastating earthquakes occurred along fault lines in Northern California during 1906 and led to serious damage across much of Southern California including portions of central San Juan Capistrano includingMission Santa Cruz and La Purisima Concepción. Unfortunately for both Missions Santa Cruz and La Purisima Concepción many native families lost their homes as well as precious artifacts from their ancient cultures which lay scattered around them following these powerful disasters. However after decades of restoration work completed by volunteers starting in the early 2000s both Missions have reopened tothe public again providing an unique opportunity for visitors to explore these historic sites firsthand While preserving many priceless objects from prior eras still remains an important goal for future generations working at both Missions
The first permanent European settlement in San Juan Capistrano was founded by the fathers of Mission San Fernando Rey de Los Angeles on December 3, 1769, just a few miles south of present-day San Juan Capistrano. The town quickly grew and soon became an important center for the missions. In 1821, the Mexican government annexed California, which led to much tension between Mexican and American settlers. The war ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and Mexico ceded most of California to America. As part of this treaty, Congress authorized two new towns in what is now Orange County: San Juan Capistrano and Mission Viejo. The first people to arrive in both towns were Spanish-speaking Californians who had come looking for land grants or other opportunities in California after independence from Spain was granted on November 8, 1846. The two towns rapidly became popular among American settlers because they offered easy access to goods available only at mission settlements farther north. In 1851, during the height of gold mining activity in California, some Americans began prospecting around what is now downtown San Juan Capistrano. They found valuable gravel and sand that could be turned into coins or jewelry as well as nuggets (a type of ore) that could be sold for a high price on street corners throughout town. This brought many small businesses into operation; some still operate today including Centennial Bank & Trust Company (founded 1897), Ameritech Telephone Company (founded 1907), and First National Bank (established 1902). In 1873–74 construction began on what is now known as Main Street; it would eventually become one of the widest streets in Orange County. That same year also saw the opening of Corona del Mar Base Camp where Ulysses S Grant served as General Manager from 1865 until his death in 1881 responsibility for all military posts east of Sacramento River
