The history of gunslingers in San Juan Capistrano dates back to the 1800s. The area around San Juan Capistrano was home to a number of ranchos, and these lands were full of natural resources that allowed for gun ownership. This also led to the development of a trade between ranchers and Mexicans who would bring firearms, ammunition, and other items to the area. In 1821, the Mexican government issued a decree which divided California into two leagues: the Alta California League and the Baja California League. The Baja California Peninsula, including San Juan Capistrano, was part of the Alta California League. The first European to explore San Juan Capistrano was José Gabriel Moraga in 1799. He named it Mission San Gabriel after Saint Gabriel who had beenpacified by Jesus Christ. In 1821, Governor Manuel Michelino ordered that all land east of Monterey County be sold to prospectors for Rancho Santa Anita. On July 6, 1823, Mission San Juan Capistrano became an adobe mission with seventeen residents and six priests as its first missionaries. The missions were abandoned in 1850 because of a lack of people and money to maintain them. However, they remain standing as examples of classical architecture in Southern California's Central Valley. A plaque on the door of one mission commemorates these historic events: "This is the oldest continuously inhabited post office in Los Angeles County." A small park adjacent to mission contains evidence from both missions such as pottery shards and clothing still remaining from when their occupants served at those locations over 150 years ago! Many important pioneers who fled Mexico during or after the Mexican-American War (1846-48) sought refuge on Pismo Beach before making their way inland; many settled near what is now downtown San Juan Capistrano and established businesses there such as Dirksen’s brewery and sawmill; José Figueroa was among these early arrivals., including his brother Felipe Figueroa who founded Joaquin Miller & Sons lumberyard in 1881.;[1] Don Miguel De la Serna purchased Rancho Rinconada north of present day downtownSan Juan Capistrano for $4,000 in 1886 installment plan;; many other families followed suit throughout much of this period., giving rise to distinctive surnames like Rinconada (owned by members of several families), Miraflores (owned by Irish Catholics), Loma Prieta (owned by German Americans), Negueruela (owned by Italian Americans), etc., etc.]
The San Juan Capistrano mission was founded on October 14, 1795 by Father Junipero Serra. The original group of missionaries included José de Benavides and Demetrius Rodriguez. The first chapel was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception on November 16, 1795. In 1821, the Mission became an ecclesiastical province under the jurisdiction of Santa Clara County. In 1853, the San Juan Capistrano mission was transferred from Santa Clara County to California Territory. On January 6, 1850, a new church was dedicated in honor of Our Lady of Nazareth with a population of only seventy-five people. In 1857, the mission became part of Obisporic University and is still being used as a research hospital today
