San Juan Capistrano is a town in California, United States. It was founded by Spanish settlers on what is now the east side of San Diego County, and became part of the United States after Mexico ceded it to the American nation in 1821. The name "Capistrano" means "island of many palm trees." The first permanent European settlement in present-day San Juan Capistrano was founded on October 14, 1769, when José Antonio Urrutia and his brother Miguel set up a trading post on an uninhabited island in the Laguna de Bay. They named their new community Yumaño (meaning "Island of Palm Trees"). In 1821, following Mexican independence from Spain, San Juan Capistrano came under American rule. As part of this process, it was renamed San JuanCapistrano County. The town's first mayor was Félix Vela y Valdés and its first schoolteacher was José Bautista Jiménez. In 1846–47, during California's Gold Rush period, a group of English-speaking prospectors discovered gold on nearby Isla Vista Peninsula; as a result, development in the area boomed. By 1850, almost all male residents had left for found new careers in California or elsewhere in America; only about twenty men remained at San JuanCapistrano to care for the population of around two hundred people who had erected homes and stored goods aboard ships arrival each year at Point Loma before sailing southward to Fillmore Bayou (now Coyote Creek) to barter with Native Americans for goods such as food and shelter while they awaited shipments of supplies that would enable them to continue mining operations beyond Isla Vista Peninsula. The San Juan Capistrano Massacre happened on July 17, 1846, when nine men were massacred by the Mexican military at the Rancho San Juan Capistrano. The men had been honored as martyrs of Mexico's War of Independence by Spanish Catholics and were celebrating their feast day.
