The original Mission had a population of about 100 people. In 1821, after years of construction, San Juan Capistrano’s church was completed. The church is made out of limestone and has a rich history that is still remembered today. It is one of America's most popular tourist destinations because it is a beautiful example of Spanish colonial architecture. In 1846, when Mexico gained its independence from Spain, many Mexican nationals decided to move to California because they saw opportunities for wealth and opportunity there. Many American Catholics followed suit and founded churches in San Juan Capistrano and other nearby towns. When Californios started voting in earnest for their statehood in 1850, they realized that their interests coincided with those of Mexican Americans living in California! Accordingly, these new settlers lobbied hard for passage of the Mexican Land Act which granted title to land east of the Isthmus Of Tehuantepec to Mexicans who had come into possession during Mexico's rule over this area including San Juan Capistrano (and other nearby villages). This act helped give impetus to Hispanic settlement in southern California beginning in 1851-2 as well as establish vineyards, breweries and other businesses alongMODERN AVERAGE PRICES
In 1769, Don José de la Vega founded San Juan Capistrano on the Rancho Rinconada in present-day San Juan County. The town was named for St. John the Baptist, who had been martyred there in 1802. In 1847, it became a part of Orange County and was renamed Santa Ana.
