It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to find and explore this area were Portuguese traders who landed in San Diego Bay in 1542. In 1769, Mexican captain Francisco de Anza founded the presidio of San Juan Capistrano on an cape on the southern coast of Orange County. The mission was abandoned after only a year because of Indian hostility and disease; it reopened in 1824 with Mexican sympathies as Padres (architects) Ignacio López y Costilla designed its red brick edifice that still stands today.. In 1848 Captain John Broughton established a new station on Mule Creek north of present day Riverside while his men fished for Mission Dolores tules (turtle shells). A second station was established at what is now Garden Grove on Mule Creek in 1850. These two stations combined provided water and goods transportation to Valley residents hiking or fishing over 1,000 miles from inland valleys. In 1875 American Commodore Matthew Perry sailed past Point Mugu into Santa Catalina Island while anchored off San Juan Capistrano Harbor and mistook it for Japan (!), thus starting hostilities between America and Japan which lasted until 1898 when Japan withdrew from World War I motivated by Washington's successful defensive trench campaign along the Pacific Rim coastline

The first European to see San Juan Capistrano was Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in 1541. Spanish missionaries, led by Father Junípero Serra, arrived in the area in 1821 and begun missionary work. The town was founded on November 12, 1821 by Captain José Joaquín Balboa as Baza del Rey (Bazaar of the King). On October 28, 1828, San Juan Capistrano became a full-fledged pueblo under Mexican rule. The name "San Juan" is derived from the indigenous word "san," meaning "a place where there is water." In 1769 Father Gaspar de Portolá named an area between Mule Valley and Carpinteria Creek after San José Hill because of its strategic location between two hostile mountain ranges. This site later became known as Mission Santa Clara de Asís. In 1933 California Statehood granted autonomy to the city of Los Angeles over the county of Orange County. On July 14, 1936, Los Angeles City Council adopted Resolution No. 5 which designated San Juan Capistrano as both a municipal and civil township within Los Angeles city limits with all powersbenevolent authority exercised therein including but not limited to: zoning regulations; street intersections; building permits; fire insurance; public works; social welfare
